Port pickup and drop off
Port of Skagway , Port of Skagway, Skagway, AK 99840, USA

Please meet at the tour waiting area of your ship pier outside security gates. The representative will be holding a Skagway Float Tours sign. Please be there 10 minutes before departure time.

This activity will end right where it started.
After port pickup in Skagway, your approx. 4-hour shore excursion starts with a pleasant 10-mile (16-km) van ride along the coastline to Chilkoot Trail. Upon arrival at the trailhead, follow your knowledgeable guide into a temperate rainforest. Your active moderate-level hike covers 2 miles (3.2 km) and begins on steep, uneven ground that ascends in elevation about 300 feet (92 meters), before proceeding downhill and then on level terrain for the last mile.

Along the way, look for local wildlife and plants, and hear engaging tales about Skagway and the Klondike Gold Rush. The Chilkoot Trail provided the most direct route between the Skagway/Dyea area and the Klondike Gold Fields around Dawson City in the Yukon. During your hike, you’ll be retracing part of the same path that prospectors of long-ago took to get around Skagway's White Pass Trail and arrive at the Yukon River.

Then, climb aboard a rubber raft seating maximum 11 passengers and drift along the Taiya River, which flows parallel to the Chilkoot Trail. Your river float takes you through the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Keep your eyes peeled and listen for possible wildlife, including otters, eagles, bears and salmon. (Note: Wildlife sightings though possible are not guaranteed)

Wrap up your rafting journey with a riverbank snack.

Your Chilkoot tour ends with transport back to Skagway's cruise terminal.

Really enjoyed the trip overall. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, pointed out wildlife and plants, and shared personal stories and history of the area. We really enjoyed it!
Great guide, small group, beautiful excursion!

We had a great time on this excursion; our guide Joe was engaging, funny, very knowledgeable and made the trip fun. We lucked out on weather and had a sunny day which made for a beautiful float tour down the river. We saw a lot of bald eagles and a few seals. Definitely recommend this hike as the nature and beauty of the Chilkoot trail is outstanding.
Great activity for a family with teens

This activity allowed us to truly experience Alaska's beauty in a close up, but not too strenuous, way. The four active teenage boys on our trip enjoyed this excursion - as did all of the adults. The hike gains about 300 feet of elevation. There are some stairs and a well-trod path. Sully - our excellent guide - kept us on the safest path and ensured the pace was good for all of us. She then steered the rubber raft that allowed the rest of us to "float" down the river. Gorgeous views. We saw more than 20 bald eagles (adults and adolescents) and that was a delightful surprise.
A great hike and float!

We took a cruise on Royal Caribbean to Alaska so my wife booked this excursion for when we went ashore in Skagway. First off our guide Rebecca was amazing. She was super friendly with everyone on the the hike, she was very knowledgeable about all the plant life in the forest. She drove the van, lead the hike, and paddled the raft - she was like superwoman. :) One note, the hike is a bit strenuous at first (nice to work off the cruise food) but eventually flattens out. We took plenty of rest breaks so the hike was not overly strenuous. There was tons of super cool plants to look at and Rebecca told all about the history of the area so that kept all the hikers engaged and entertained. Definitely wear boots because this is a rain forest - your shoes will get muddy. The float part was relaxing, there are no rapids so it's very safe and enjoyable. We saw dozens of eagles and we even saw one eating a salmon on a nearby sand bar. We had good weather so that was nice, I would not want to hike this in the rain - the trail would likely be very slippery. All in all a great hike and well worth the time and money.
Skagwaytrail and river trip

The good: beautiful scenery. Our personal walking guide was good and very helpful. The bad: We thought the excursion was priced too high for what you got. The walking trail is pretty difficult, even for those like us who hike a lot in the mountains and the desert. Be prepared, this is not a moderate hike. You climb and descend rocky, narrow dirt paths along the side of the mountain. You need to be in fairly good shape to do this and best to use walking sticks or something to steady yourself along with proper hiking shoes. The guide for the river portion was pretty stand offish. Had a chip on his shoulder and no sense of humor (maybe he did not like his job). He was knowledgeable of the area and had been doing it a long time but not personable at all. River trip was great. Peaceful and quiet. Only problem was that day it was very windy and cold (even for end of May, first of June). Dress appropriately. It was pretty cold and a little drizzly....typical Alaska in the summertime.
Great way to work off too many trips to the buffett!

We enjoyed our tour with Brooke. She was extremely knowledgeable of the ecosystems along the trail. Given she is native to the area she also knew a lot about the history. She made sure our safety along the trail was her first priority. The scenery is beautiful and the float trip was a perfect way to end the hike. The hike is more than a moderate hike, lots of rocks and steep inclines to navigate. We were able to complete the hiking portion even though we are not die hard hikers. They do offer an easier trail for people who aren't comfortable with the navigating rocks. I thought this was a nice option. We used trekking poles to help with additional points of contact. Brooke did have extra poles if people chose to use them, we brought our own. Back bug spray. I would definitely recommend this trip. We saw great scenery and still left plenty of time to explore the town of Skagway.

Overall a very good experience. The hike and float were relatively easy and we learned quite a bit. Our guide Bob was very knowledgeable, very informative, very nice and kept us safe but I do have to admit that our first impression of him was a little shocking...but all is good.

Absolutely Amazing Time!!!

Me and my husband had the absolute best time on this excursion. It was difficult for me because I am out of shape, but nothing that I could not handle. I was somewhat winded three times during the hike up the mountain, but the guide made sure that we were able to take as many breaks as needed. I appreciated the fact that he did not rush us to get through the excursion, much like you can get from excursions booked from the cruise ship. The hike was great, but the rafting back down the river really made for a complete experience. The float was very relaxing and entertaining and the guide did all the work and truly practiced safety to ensure no one went overboard. We seen sea lions, bald eagles, and many birds. The float lasted almost an hour and ended with a snack and a little bit of free time. Me and my husband truly enjoyed our time and would do it all over again!

This trip included a 2 mile hike on the Chillroot trail. Beautiful forest. Ryan our guide was informative and helpful. I strongly recommend this trip as a way to see some of outdoor terrain and a good contrast to the more touristy activities.
