Departure Time

5:00 PM

Hotel pickups commence approximately 30 - 60 minutes prior to this time, exact pickup time will be advised on reconfirmation.

After evening pickup from your Fairbanks or North Pole hotel, take a leisurely drive northeast of the city, perhaps spotting a fox, beaver, or moose along the way, before reaching Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Engage in a variety of activities while you wait for the sky to darken to view the northern lights. First, tour one of the most unique museums you’ll ever visit, the Aurora Ice Museum, constructed out of over 1,000 tons of ice and snow. Marvel at ice sculptures by world-renowned carvers Steve and Heather Brice, whose work includes life-size jousters on horses and a two-level tower with a circular staircase.

Fancy a drink? Head over to the museum’s bar, settle in on a caribou fur–covered stool and purchase a cocktail poured into a martini glass carved out of ice. For food, check out the offerings at the Aurora Café or the Chena Hot Springs Resort Restaurant (own expense).

Or, put on your bathing suit and work on loosening those knots in your back. Slip into the resort’s hot springs, which swirl with lake water averaging 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius) all year. Escape to an outdoor hot tub and unwind under the stars. A heated indoor pool is also available.

Then, dress warmly and meet your guide for a small group outing to watch for the northern lights. You’ll be taken to prime viewing locations at Chena Hot Springs, a great spot to witness the green and purple ribbons of light dazzling the sky. If you prefer to be indoors, you can see the action from inside the Aurora Café. Either way, you’ll be holding a warm drink as you gaze at the celestial wonder.
Afterward, enjoy transport back to your hotel, with a commemorative certificate of your viewing experience at Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Aurora Ice Museum
Dress in warm winter layers before being picked up from your Fairbanks or North Pole hotel and transported to Chena Hot Springs Resort, located roughly 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Fairbanks. On your 1.5-hour drive, keep your eyes peeled on the passing landscape for wildlife that might include a moose, beaver or fox. Once you arrive at Chena Hot Springs Resort, enjoy an array of activities as you wait for the prime time to view the northern lights. First, follow your guide to the Aurora Ice Museum, which is crafted from more than 1,000 tons of ice and snow. Kept at a cool 25 degrees F (-7 degrees C), the museum houses intricate ice sculptures created by world- champion ice carvers Steve and Heather Brice. Their two-story observation tower includes a circular staircase, life-size jousters on horseback, an ice outhouse and more. If you’d like, purchase a drink served in an ice-carved martini glass inside the museum’s bar, where you can relax on caribou fur–covered stools and warm your hands by the ice fireplace.

This was a terrible experience. I thought it was a rip off. I understand Northern lights are not guaranteed but for the price and what we got it was ridiculous. Charging us that much money and then still we have to pay for our meal in an expensive restaurant that we have no choice in is not right. Too much downtime. Charging for an apple martini. These things should all have been included in the price. Directions of the itinerary warrant consistent or clear. . It was obvious we weren’t going to see the lights but we still had to stay there till midnight before we could leave. Terrible . The guide was OK

Bad tour ! We left late and guide was lost. I believe the guide has potential to become a good guide but it was definetely not fair to put the group with someone with no experience in the northern lights or touristic tours. Ice museum is really bad for the price. Hot springs are dirty. Restaurant wasn't booked. Tour should offer to cancel if aurora forecast is not good. I really don't think it's worth the price.

Jake was a great tour guide! He shared information about the area and answered questions as they came up. We had a wonderful time at Chena Hot Springs - the ice museum, dinner with those in our group, and the hot springs. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the northern lights due to weather, but had fun trying! We would recommend this tour and tour guide.

I didn't know hot spring was 60 miles outside Fairbanks. Van was warm enough and guide was lively and fun. We saw a couple of moose on the way; one on the road and we had to brake for. At the Ice Museum, a sculptor made ice glasses from which we drank...Impressed by his quick creation. We enjoyed the outdoor heated spring pool surrounded by snow-covered rocks for hours. However, outside was -20 degrees. It's a shock when you walk from the indoor pool area to the outside down the walkway/ramp until you enter the heated spring. Witnessed Northern Lights!

Not worth it

Booked 2 tours to see the Aurora for this trip one of which was cancelled and that was the night the aurora showed up. This particular tour is a last minute thing. Not impressed. Too much waiting and wasting time from pick up to drop off. Activities were not clearly stated. Do’s and don’ts in the hot spring, what to bring etc. Dinner was reserved but not included so you can eat at the restaurant but you have to pay for it. I wish tours like this should be cancelled if Aurora forecast is not good.

Dear Jade, we apologize for the inconveniences this caused for you. Unfortunately, we are not able to predict the Aurora in our unpredictable Alaskan weather. We do state this in the description of our tour, which you can read before booking any of our tours. We also explain this to our customers, as good as we can, if we get a phone call. Cancelations are unfortunately something what can happen with any company, due to hazardous weather, road conditions, illnesses or broken down vans and this is also something we mostly do not know until the day off, which is also stated in the tour description. We are of course trying our very best to avoid this as much as possible and we wish it would never have to come down to this, but it is sadly not fully preventable. To cancel tours are a huge loss for a tour company and not something we decide easily. If you still have anything else you would like to talk about, you can give us a call in the office at any time. We hope you still enjoyed your stay in our frozen wonderland.

Our tour guide Lexie was amazing. She was very informative and very friendly. She really made the tour an unforgettable experience. We were determined to find the northern lights and we were successful. Lexie kept us safe driving thru what looked like challenging conditions thru icy roads. Would recommend 100% to all my friends.
