The Basics

Travelers can spend time swimming, snorkeling, and diving at the crescent-shaped caldera, where ocean depths range from 10 to 60 feet. All trips include snorkel gear as well as a scenic boat ride, and the chance to splash in the clear blue water at one of Maui's best snorkel sites. Sail and snorkel adventures generally last about five hours and offer roundtrip transportation from hotels in Lahaina and Makena. Some Molokini snorkeling tours also offer scuba diving for certified divers.

Molokini Crater Zodiak Adventure Snorkel & Turtle Cove Swim
Our tour guides were incredible!! They remembered every one of our name and made the whole experience so much fun! The food was great the boat was clean and fast! The snorkeling was amazing!! The only downside was, I wish I would have booked through them directly. I tried adjusting my reservation in size and was charged the original amount.. getting Viator to refund the one person has been a challenge.

Molokini Crater Snorkeling 2 hours Tour
Probably not the biggest bang for your buck at 120/person and only 2 hrs long. 20 guests on the boat. Snorkeling equipment was OK. The captain seemed knowledgeable and sometimes funny. No food served on this tour like the 5 hr Lanai tour on the Quicksilver. They did have juice and water though. The crater was cool but no turtles on this trip.

Molokini Crater plus Turtle Town Snorkeling 4 hours Tour
These guys were perfect! We got there early, before all the other boats got there. We got to see: starfish, eel, octopus, many many beautiful fish. Then they took us to turtle town where we swam with the turtles. Amazing experience! They even hooked us up with a guy for surfing lessons and a way to get discount on grocery at Foodland… saved me $50 yesterday.

Molokini Crater and South Maui Coast Adventure from Kihei
Swimming with the turtles and seeing beautiful sea life in Molikini was worth the early start. Kaika and Sean were knowledgeable and friendly. The boat ride was fun and safe. They took us to several spots which provided different experiences. They also provided wetsuits which made the water more comfortable.

Molokini Crater and South Maui Coast Adventure from Kihei
Magnificent snorkeling with abundant life -- Molokini atoll and its back wall; La Perouse Bay and Turtle Bay off Maui; adept boat and people handling; and a flow of education about the history, geology, and biology of the area. A perfect morning of immersion in ocean life.

Excellent time and awesome snorkeling. Saw tons of different fish and Jonathon even showed us an octopus. Turtle town was a bit crowded but saw lots of turtles.

Molokini Crater Zodiak Adventure Snorkel & Turtle Cove Swim
Pretty amazing trip! The captain and his skipper were fantastic and the vessel was truly one of a kind. We saw the expected turtles and interior of Molokini crater…then someone spotted whales and we made a short detour to check them out. One of the most memorable Maui excursions ever.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Beat the crowds with an early Molokini tour.

  • Be sure to bring sunscreen and a swimsuit.

  • Snuba diving (a kind of snorkeling-scuba diving hybrid) is available as an upgrade on many Molokini snorkeling tours.

  • Private charters are available for personalized experiences.

How To Get There

Set off Maui's southern coastline, Molokini Crater is only accessible by boat, powerboat, or raft. Popular departure points include Maalaea Harbor and Kihei Boat Ramp. The Molokini snorkel tours that leave from Maalaea Harbor are on large, stable boats, whereas tours that leave from Kihei Boat Ramp are on small rafts that are faster and bumpier, shortening the overall travel distance.

When To Get There

Mornings offer the calmest conditions at this tropical caldera, and the earlier you get there the better. Tradewinds can be strong in summer, making for a thrilling ride back. Winter tends to have lighter winds, plus the added bonus of potentially spotting humpback whales.

Why Molokini Crater is Hawaii's Best Snorkeling Spot

Because Molokini is three miles offshore of Maui, you never know what you're going to find. Eagle rays, dolphins, and harmless reef sharks will frequently mingle with resident critters like parrotfish and octopus. In winter if you dive a few feet below water, or go on a scuba or snuba dive, the haunting song of humpback whales reverberates in the distance. Note that Hawaiian green sea turtles are rarely spotted at Molokini Crater, which is why many boats include a second snorkeling trip at "Turtle Town" off of Maui's southern coast.
